PARAGON DRONES
Industrial Infrastructure Drone Inspection – Waste-to-Energy Facility
Project Overview
Paragon Drones carried out an internal inspection of a waste-to-energy facility in the South East UK, focusing on hard-to-reach structural areas within the plant.
The objective was to capture high-quality inspection data while reducing the need for working at height and minimising operational risk.
Inspection Challenges
The inspection involved complex internal structures with restricted access and limited visibility. Traditional inspection methods would have required working at height, scaffolding, or temporary access solutions.
These approaches introduce increased risk, additional time, and potential disruption to operations.
Drone Inspection Approach
A specialist drone system was deployed to carry out the inspection within the structure.
Operating in a GPS-denied environment, the drone enabled stable flight and controlled navigation through internal and elevated areas—capturing detailed visual data without requiring personnel access to hazardous or hard-to-reach locations.
The same class of drone systems is used in confined space inspections, allowing safe operation in restricted and complex environments.
Results
- 36 drone flights completed
- 184GB of high-resolution inspection data captured
- Full coverage of internal structural areas
- No requirement for working at height access
- Reduced operational disruption
The inspection was completed efficiently, delivering comprehensive data while maintaining a safe operating environment.
Operational Benefits
Drone-based inspection allowed the client to assess internal structures safely and efficiently, without the delays and risks associated with traditional access methods.
The approach reduced operational impact while providing clear, reliable data to support inspection and maintenance requirements.
Drone Operations in Complex Industrial Environments & Infrastructure
Operating drones in industrial environments requires careful planning, risk management, and an understanding of site-specific constraints.
Facilities such as waste-to-energy plants present challenges including restricted access, confined operational areas, and safety-critical infrastructure.
Drone deployment in these environments enables accurate data capture while reducing the need for personnel exposure.
Operational and Airspace Security Considerations
This project highlights the challenges of operating in complex industrial environments, including restricted access, safety constraints, and the need for accurate data capture.
Environments such as waste-to-energy facilities also present considerations relevant to airspace security, including:
- Limited visibility and confined operational areas
- Potential for unauthorised drone activity
- The importance of situational awareness and control of low-altitude airspace
For organisations operating in similar environments, understanding drone-related risk is critical.
Paragon supports security providers and infrastructure operators through structured airspace security and Counter-UAS advisory.

Inspection of Complex Industrial Environments
Paragon has experience operating across complex, safety-critical environments, supporting both operational delivery and risk-informed decision-making.
